Exposure to Tiny Houses

If you're reading this, you are either someone I know or someone that's into tiny houses. Tiny houses. are great on so many different levels and I push and promote the virtues of tiny living at any and every opportunity that I get. As you mull your options and try to figure out if a tiny house is right for you, I want to encourage you to do some or all of the following things to move further down the road towards arming yourself with as much knowledge and insight to allow you to move beyond simply seeing tiny houses as a 'someday' sort of thing:
  • Watch Youtube videos: You maybe already do this but there are many people doing really great tiny house tour videos. Personal friend and tiny house expert Derek 'Deek' Diedricksen is one of those folks you should seek out if you don't already.
  • Go to tiny house shows: They won't always be conveniently located, but go anyway. Turn it into a camping/road trip. United Tiny House Association puts on some great shows, so check out their schedule and make an effort to go. You'll see a lot of options and ultimately all of this is to help you hone in on what you like and what you don't like about various builds that you'll get to see.
  • Read books on the subject: Yours truly has this pretty comprehensive book coming out soon, so give it a read.
  • Stay in a tiny house: There are more and more places popping up where you have a the ability to stay in a tiny house (or Skoolie, or similar). Even as a tiny house builder, I do this from time to time to see what other builders are doing and what I can incorporate into my builds (Tiny House Espionage!). Getaway is a great example. There are others.
  • Go visit a tiny house builder: I'm always happy when people want to come visit my workshop to see what I do. It's a great opportunity to ask questions and to see the process involved in building these structures.
  • Go to a tiny house workshop or camp: These take place in different parts fo the country throughout the year. Some are no doubt better than others, but being able to get some hands on building experience is great regardless of if you plan to have a tiny house built or doing it yourself. The opportunity to ask a ton of questions is there for you take advantage of.
That's about all I can think of. Get out there. I've previously written about the tiny house community being friendly and inclusive. That's really true and if you start doing some of the things listed above you'll hopefully find out that it's true as well.

Hi Chris! I just saw you on Deek's channel and thought I would say hello since I am a fellow New Jerseyan. I live in Long Branch now but I grew up in Scotch Plains. Your tiny house is brilliant. I'm not a builder but I'm a fan of building. I'm more of a "what do I already have that I can throw together" kind of person. I love your butcher block cutting boards counter and the coop windows. You do great work and I'm glad I got to see it. Thanks for being awesome. Many blessings to you, Karen
